RE: Alaska at today's fuel price

I don't mean to sound cold or elitest. It is 2000 miles from Seattle to Fairbanks. A trip to Alaska is an adventure and holds a fair amount of risk . Everything is imported and everything is expensive. Anyone planning a trip like this should have lots of backup plans and extra money in place. My cousin went in a one year old DP, developed major engine trouble and spent four unplanned weeks in Alaska. It could happen to anyone. My point was, if you were seriously planning to go to Alaska a year ago and an extra thousand or two for fuel is stopping you, you probably didn't have enough reserve planned. If you want to go in a Toyota Corolla and a tent, have at it. People have done it.

People driving slower?

It may have been my imagination but driving east on three lane I-4 tonight from Orlando towards Deland, it appeared that lines of cars in the two right lanes actually bouncing along at 55-60. There were still plenty of idiots in jacked up, extended cab, long bed 4X4 V-8 pickups going 80 but I think people may be beginning to slow down. Scary thought.

RE: Cannot get Onan genny to start

Low oil pressure sensors are semi-famous for going bad. I think you can disconnect it temporarily to see if thats it. An Onan will crank until it has oil pressure then it starts. Bad sensor, no sparkee.

RE: ROCK CHIP Windshield Protection

escaper, I think you are talking about Diamond Shield front end cover. The OP is about Diamond Fusion, a glass treatment. It looks interesting but there was a thread here last week where someone that had it got a rock chip and called when they got back from their trip and were denied coverage because you have to call in a claim within 48 hours. Well THAT would peeve me off!! I thought the rain handling would be nice but I don't think it is worth the cost. Maybe if I drove more.

RE: Who has had an unusual European car?

A corollary is why don't the English make computers? They couldn't figure out how to make it leak oil. I had some English sports cars, too. Great fun when running.

RE: If Price Didn't Matter, What Trailer Would You Buy?

33 Airstream with a love seat slide. Custom kingsize bed. Dodge 3500 CTD with a topper and a full length bed slide out tray. Or maybe the Duramax with the Allison.

RE: Alaska at today's fuel price

The fuel costs a thousand or so more. If you can't afford the difference, you shouldn't have been planning to go in the first place.

RE: Ultra-Luxury RV Resort

I am not sure I understand. I THINK they are saying each site has a kitchen? $350/nite and not on the ocean, in view of a mountain stream or a navigable river? Not with my money.

RE: Beachfront site in Maine??

Libbys in Yorke but they book up years in advance for peak season. You can get in before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. Also Mt. Desert Narrows near Bar Harbor.

RE: Worst Park/Campground Trick

A series of unfortunate events, no doubt. BUT leaving a hose connected to your black tank washer is just plain not wise. If a valve drips even a little it can fill the tank up and have the same results.

RE: Who has had an unusual European car?

I had a Citroen 2CV. CLICKY LINK Probably the most fun car I have ever owned. I have had a Porsche, Z cars, 60's cars, etc but nothing drew a crowd like the two horses. Wish I had never sold it and will buy another someday when the time is right.

RE: All this talk about warranty work has me worried

Must be different out west. In Florida all the dealers I used gladly took the business. I bought for $15K less than Lazy Days would quote.

RE: Portable Gas Grill

It would be impossible to fold the cart up with the grill attached. Its hard enough just to set up the cart!! I like it though; although the velcro doesn't go through the middle with the grease tray installed. Am I missing something? It works fine as a stand.

RE: All this talk about warranty work has me worried

Lots of people told me that local dealers would not service an RV that hadn't been purchased from them. From my experience, that was a lot of hogwash. I bought brand new Fleetwood DP out of state and have had no problem getting warranty work performed at several dealers in Florida, including a window replacement and not minor slide work. I had AC work done at a non-Fleetwood dealer. One thing I found was that even a crummy dealer doesn't treat their regular customers very well either. I had a poor experience with the first Fleetwood dealer I used; not doing items they said were complete, not having the unit ready when they said it would be, etc, but sitting in the waiting room revealed that their regular customers were very disatisfied as well. They weren't singling me out, they treated everybody poorly. The other dealers I used were glad to get the business and did good work. Times are tight. I doubt you will have trouble getting a dealer to make more money for himself. One problem my last service manager told me was that the factories are tightening up on what they will pay for under warranty and customers are having to fight with the manufacturer to get claims approved. Dealers get caught in the middle sometimes. I also would make sure the manufacturer will allow you to bring it back to the factory if you are not happy with the dealers work or there is major repair needed EG delamination, etc.

RE: Equalizing batteries - important or not?

Normal use builds up lead sulfate on the plates. Equalizing knocks it off. Deep cycle batteries have a special place for all that junk to drop to without shorting out the plates. Here is more than you want to know about batteries and equalizing. CLICKY LINK

RE: DIRECTV Debacle, Continuing Saga

Hang in there. My HD conversions have gone seamlessly. I have had to occasionally (1-2 times a year) unplug my DVR to reset it.
